|Chronological and political information|
Breetai was a Zentraedi commander that appeared in Robotech: The Macross Saga and was voiced by Tony Clay. A proud warrior of the Zentraedi Legion, he was initially tasked by Supreme Commander Dolza]] to recover Zor's Battlefortress. He and his trusted advisor Exedore played a battle wits against Captain Henry Gloval and the crew aboard the Super Dimension Fortress-1 Macross (SDF-1). He would later become enamored with the Micronian culture, and defect to humanity's side. After the war, Breetai became part of the Robotech Expeditionary Force, and played a crucial role during the many conflicts in deep space. He was known as Britai Kridanik in The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, the series which was adapted into the first "saga" of Robotech.
Breetai was second in command of all Zentraedi forces, after Supreme Commander Dolza himself. He was one of the more powerful Zentraedi stocks proto-genetically created of the Robotech Masters. Breetai has shown himself to be a true military genius, time and time again, securing a well-established position in the inner circle Supreme Commander Dolza. Breetai stood 13.54 metres (44.4 feet) tall and weighs 16,750 kg (36,930 lbs). Breetai was the second largest Zentraedi after Dolza himself.
Breetai has black hair and one dark blue eye. The right half of Breetai's scalp and nearly half his face were severely burned in a battle long ago. To cover his injuries, Breetai wore a metal alloy prosthesis on the right side of his face with a glittering crystal lens in place of his right eye.
In addition to his size, Breetai was stronger and more resilient than most Zentraedi as is demonstrated in throughout series. Breetai, after being blown out of a hull breach while engaging in hand to hand combat with three Veritech mecha, was able survive and function in the vacuum of space for several minutes without any protective suit or oxygen source. Upon safely reentering the ship, Breetai's incredible strength is evident in that despite that ordeal he quickly reengages his opponents with even more ferocity and is able to overpower and tear apart most of them with his bare hands. Max Sterling escaped only by being blown out another breach himself. Breetai was also able to survive thruster blasts and explosions at very close range without any visible injuries.
Retrieving Zor's Battlefortress
Prior to the outbreak of the First Robotech War, Zentraedi Supreme Commander Dolza was ordered by the Robotech Masters to find Zor's Battlefortress which contained the stolen Protoculture Matrix. Their situation was dire as they were running out of Protoculture, a powerful of energy. Dolza knows that finding the ship is like finding a needle in the galactic haystack. Breetai was then chosen for this difficult mission because of his military skill and intellect and his reputation as the best field commander of all the Zentraedi Legion.
Eventually, Breetai and his fleet find the battlefortress on Earth, which marked the beginning of the First Robotech War. Breetai was assisted by Exedore, one the most knowledgeable of his race. The two were rarely apart as Exedore's intelligence proved to be an asset to Breetai's military prowess in various endeavours. Breetai conducted his operations from the bridge of his flagship. The largest ship in his fleet, Breetai's flagship was four kilometers long.
On Earth, Breetai found Zor's battlefortress completely remodeled and was confounded by the actions of the earthlings, derisively termed "Micronians". Their counterattack consisted of two ARMD class carrier bewildered him, as he believed that the Micronians were not even able to fully understand their own weapons. Breetai then ordered a scout team down and the destruction of the city surrounding the fortress, which they later learn was now called the Super Dimension Fortress-1 (SDF-1). These actions cause SDF-1's captain, Captain Henry Gloval, to order a space fold, which took his ship and the entirety of Macross Island around Pluto. Breetai followed, and as the SDF-1 tried to worked its way back to Earth, he launched wave after wave to harass the ship, but not destroy it, out of fear of destroying the Protoculture Matrix.
Culture ContaminationAs the war with the SDF-1 continued, more and more soldiers under Breetai's command become enamoured with the human way of life due to their increased exposure to human emotions and culture. In April 2011, Zentraedi infiltrator Miriya Parina fell in love with human ace pilot Max Sterling and the two were married in a huge ceremony on board the SDF-1. The wedding proved to be such a significant event that the Zentraedi also observe the wedding (which was broadcast on television). Breetai, who was watching the event on his monitor, asks Exedore what Miriya is doing. Exedore explains that she was "getting married", which he explained to Breetai is "a condition in which male and female live together". Breetai, despite his view that marriage was a "strange Micronian custom", nonetheless believed that Miriya was enjoying herself and he wonders aloud what he suspects: that Miriya, like previous Zentraedi defectors, had found the human way of life too enjoyable to resist. Exedore commented that human emotions were something which the Zentraedi seem to have no defense against.
Rain of Death
Breetai was subsequently ordered by his Supreme Commander to launch a full scale assault to destroy the SDF-1, but by now, Breetai, like many of the Zentraedi under him, is having second thoughts. During the battle, Miriya showed Max how to disable Zentraedi fighters without killing the pilots. This new tactic was then utilized by the rest of the SDF-1's forces. This development, combined with the Zentraedi's increased exposure to human emotions and the realization that the human way of life may just be more enjoyable (a feeling that was amplified by watching Miriya, their greatest warrior, getting married to a human) caused a wave of mutinies to spread through the Breetai's fleet as soldiers refuse to fight and turn against their superiors. Breetai, realizing that his forces could no longer fight, was forced to call a truce with the SDF-1.
Breetai's decision to call a truce with the SDF-1 one marked him and his fleet for death by Dolza, who feared further contamination of human culture would destroy the entirety of Zentraedi Legion if it was not halted. In 2011, Dolza mobilized his Grant Fleet of 4.8 million warships to travel to Earth to destroy the planet, the SDF-1 and the contaminated Zentraedi. Breetai and his forces joined the SDF-1 in the against Dolza's fleet. Although this new alliance was unable to prevent 95% of Earth's surface from being devastated by Dolza's fleet, they were able to destroy Dolza, his planetoid home base and virtually the entire Grand fleet. This defeat marks the end of the Zentraedi's once awesome galactic power.
During the Reconstruction Era, Breetai and the surviving Zentraedi worked tirelessly to rebuild Earth along with the human survivors of the war. Although some Zentraedi found themselves unable to overcome their natural urge to fight, many of them, including Breetai remained loyal to his new human friends. In June 2013, Breetai lead a Zentraedi/Human operation to capture the last remaining Zentraedi Robotech Factory. Among those under his command during the operation are Rick Hunter, Lisa Hayes, Claudia Grant, Max Sterling and Miriya Parina Sterling. In addition to helping rebuild Earth, the factory also served as the platform to build the Super Dimension Fortress-3 Pioneer SDF-3, the flagship of the Robotech Expeditionary Force (REF) to search for the Robotech Masters' homeworld.
- In the Jack McKinney Robotech Sentinels novels, Breetai was placed in charge of mining operations on the world of Fantoma, where he recalled the suppressed memories of his past life before the Zentraedi race was made into soldiers for the Robotech Masters. Eventually he commands the remaining Zentraedi in a battle against the Invid on the world of Optera, where he and the Invid Regent die in combat together. However, before dying, he develops a romantic relationship with a female Zentraedi, Kazianna Hesh, with whom he conceives the first non-micronized Zentraedi child shortly before his death.
- Breetai's full name was given as Breetai Tul during the Jack McKinney novelizations and Eternity Comic's adaptations.
- Original design was by iconic character designer Haruhiko Mikimoto.
- In order to avoid infringing on the original designs for Macross characters designed by Haruhiko Mikimoto, Breetai, like other Macross characters was redesigned for later Robotech productions such as Robotech II: The Sentinels. Not only was he micronized, but he also acquired a helmet to replace his metallic eyepatch.
- According to Shōji Kawamori, the episode Blind Game, the creators wanted to expose Britai (Breetai in Robotech) to the deep vacuum of space to counter the popular notions people have of space. Writer Arthur C. Clarke and director Stanley Kubrick also tried to dispel the popular misconceptions about people in a vacuum with the famous unprotected space walk scene in "2001: A Space Odyssey." Kawamori has always professed admiration for the late director and his film 2001 in particular.
