The Pioneer-class Super Dimensional Fortress, most commonly referred to as the Super Dimension Fortress-3 Pioneer or simply SDF-3, was a fold-capable battlefortress and the flagship of the Pioneer Mission. Unlike its predecessors the Super Dimensional Fortress-1 Macross (SDF-1) or Super Dimension Fortress-2 Megalord (SDF-2), it wasn't capable of transforming into a human-like configuration, though it did have powerful Reflex cannons built in, and other advancements.
The Super Dimension Fortress-3 Pioneer (SDF-3) was designed to be the flagship for the Pioneer Mission. The capabilities of this ship were built around the Gloval Initiative, where the objective was to neutralize the enemy's capacity to make war in their homeworld or, alternatively, to ensure that the next Robotech War would be fought thousands of light-years away from Earth.
The Pioneer-class was worked hard in the front lines of the Robotech Expeditionary Forces various operations, and several times the ship was damaged in combat. In early 2029 she paid off for a long overdue refit and modernisation. However, it was discovered that repeated, multiple space folds in combination with neglected action damage had caused tears and cracking in the primary structural hull members.
The military situation of the Pioneer Mission precluded the SDF-3 from folding to Earth, and the battlefortress served as the core of the fleet that warred against the Invid in deep space. Prior to the final offensive against the Invid on Earth, the SDF-3 was refitted again and equipped with Shadow cloaking technology. In 2045, she folded from Space Station Liberty to Earth, as the flagship for the final battle on Reflex Point. however, she never arrived at her destination, and was listed later as missing.
